Hey, being pregnant is the only time in your life when you can totally eat whatever you want without guilt! I mean, you don't need to go crazy but yogurt and fruit is diet food, not baby making food! I have noticed that most of my friends eat way healthier once they have kids, though.

By the way, I have taken to translating your blog with google translator. It is totally awful, but good for most of the vocab I don't know. So I read a sentence first in Spanish, then in translation. It takes some time but hopefully my spanish will improve!

Dear Amy,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to translate and read this thing. I also hope it will help you improve your Spanish, which is pretty decent as far as I remember.

And I'm sorry, but I have to correct you. Pregnancy is one of the guiltiest times to eat, because for the first time, what you eat not only affects you, but the little one as well. I've never been so conscious about what I put in my mouth. And the yogurt and fruit are plentiful only in snack meals, I eat all sorts of proteins, carbs, and other things during the main meals.

I swear, if I ate everything my body tells me to eat, I would be eating all day long, that can't possibly be good.

I also translate in Google, and I agree that it is generally horrific, although quite easy.

I ate SO MUCH when I was pregnant with Grace; it was a bit terrible. I ate all the good stuff that you need to eat (lots of fruits and veggies and proteins) but then I also ate a lot of cake and whatnot. There was a whole month in my 2nd trimester that in hindsight we dubbed cake month when I gained 18 lbs. Yes, that was in ONE MONTH.

And I do think it is a little more complicated than that about all the prenatal testing that is available. I think the biggest question parents-to-be have to answer is what will you DO with the information you will get, and that depends so much on your beliefs and personality and whatnot. One of our friends at Yale was a spina bifida researcher and yet when she was pregnant, she turned down the 1st trimester triple screen because she decided she wouldn't do anything differently during her pregnancy if her child did have a spinal tube defect and it would not be helpful to her to know for months and months ahead of the birth. I did turn down most of the prenatal testing (other than ultrasounds) during my pregnancies because in the risk/benefit/cost analysis it didn't make sense for us, given our personalities and beliefs and circumstances. I'm glad the options for testing are out there, but I'm glad that we get to choose for ourselves whether to use them.

Dear Julia,

I agree with you. I guess it came out weird the way I said it, but of course I agree that those screening tests should be optional. Niv and I spent some time discussing options, and thankfully we found out we are very much on the same page in those matters... I guess one marries a given guy for good reasons.

Holy cow!, 18 pounds in one month??. Although, I gained ~4 pounds in three days at the Ringberg castle, so I can see how that can happen.
